Don't be fooled by candidates who speak coherently, Perry warns

CHARLESTON — Following his third shaky Republican debate performance earlier this week, Texas Gov. Rick Perry warned voters not to be swayed by “rational” candidates who speak in “coherent” sentences.

“As conservatives, we know that values and vision matters the best,” Perry said in a speech to Republican activists in South Carolina. “It’s not who’s the most coherent candidate. It’s not the candidate who can speak in sentences that actually make sense, or articulate their thoughts in a rational way. What we need right now in our country is someone at the helm who represents the strong traditional values we all share – someone who’ll stand up to the terrorists, hippies and gays.”

Although he did not mention his opponents by name, Cain and Romney were unmistakably in his sights.

“America doesn’t need more slick-talking politicians whose words you can comprehend and whose arguments sound articulate,” Perry said to a burst of applause. “Sure, their lucid and intelligible promises might sound good if they’re slapped on a pizza box, or embroidered on some holy underwear, but they have nothing to do with standing up for our core conservative values.”

Political experts say Perry’s warning is likely an attempt to reverse falling poll numbers the one-time front runner has seen since appearing in several debates looking dazed and lapsing into occasional gibberish.
